Dive Day Rosta
Posted by Puddlediver on Mon, 21 Apr 2008 09:24 AM (210 reads)
DIVE DAY ORGANISER ROSTER
Hi All, Committee had a discussion at the weekend about trialling out a Roster system for Dive Day organising. Essentially, all those who are Sports Dive or above, are being asked to volunteer to organise a club dive day.
In summary, what this comprises is:
1. A roster is put together of all those who can / want to organise a dive day
2. The dive day is for all club members, and can comprise of a shore, boat, pond or a combination of any of the afore kinda dive.
3. The dive day can comprise 1, 2 or more dives,
The small print however:
1. Once rostered, then if you cannot make or organise a dive for that weekend, it is your responsibility to swap with someone else within the club
2. Sports divers or equivalent, who are rostered, will be appointed a DL or above, to assist them in organising the day
And thats about it... the boat can be anyones boat, so no restruictions if people wish to organise an event of someones private boat or a boat we haven't used before. Shore dives can be anywhere within reason, of Melbourne CBD, noting that we have to be back at the Docs for the club meeting, and yehh thats about it.

CDAA Deep Cavern and Cave courses
Posted by Sealinator on Wed, 07 May 2008 05:49 AM (217 reads)
Club Weekends away - with the CDAA !
The Club is planning a couple of weekends in Mount Gambier where you can either
a) Get your CDAA Deep Cavern rating - this is the first step in being able to dive CDAA rated sites. Qualifies the recipient to dive to 40m, and within-the-light-zone penetration of CDAA rated caverns and sinkholes (see www.cavedivers.com.au for exact qualifications). Normally takes two weekends (one in Melbourne and one in Mt G) or can be run 'all in one hit' over in Mt Gambier
or
b) Get your CDAA Cave rating - for those who are already Deep Cavern qualified and with the necessary dives, you can enroll in the Cave course which qualifies the recipient to dive CDAA rated cave sites (penetration to 1/3 of air, no restriction to be too narrow as to prevent two divers running side-by-side, and allowing them to turn together - again, see www.cavedivers.com.au for full details)
or
c) those with a rating to go diving either during the training courses or at different sites
Basically, if we can get enough people together, we should be able to negotiate cheaper courses. And with a group of us together we should also be able to get cheaper group accomodation.
So.....if you are up for a laugh and a weekend away whilst simultaneously increasing your diving skills (use of reels, improving your buoyancy, dealing with u/w incidents in situations that prevent direct access to the surface etc etc) then contact either Neil R or myself
DATES: to be arranged, however currently planning towards September at some stage.
c'mon, have a giggle !

Magazines
Posted by Puddlediver on Tue, 18 Mar 2008 03:07 AM (324 reads)
It became apparent at the club meeting on the weekend that the monthly magazines have gone missing (again). We should have received the February edition at the Scuba Doctor several weeks ago, but it has not arrived. We have requested that the February magazine be reshipped and are investigating if we also have a problem for March.
Everyone should have received up to and including the January edition to their registered home address. If you did not receive these please let Neil know.
Sorry everyone for this continuing stuff up, we are doing our best to rectify the problem.
regards
the committee

Historic Ship Wrecks Day - 12th April 2008
Posted by Puddlediver on Mon, 17 Mar 2008 12:09 PM (243 reads)
DIVE DAY BEEN RE-CONFIRMED - RE-REGISTRATION IMPORTANT
Saturday 12th April 2008
First dive: Ingoldsby reef that has the Inverlochy smashed up on it. – Depth max 15m, is 2km of shore,, simply not dived.. this is a site NO ONE EVER goes to apart from the cray fisherman. It’s a reef that sits proud on the sea with a wreck smashed up on one side of it. Its apparently dripping with marine life, but its just not spoken about. (backup if the weather is too bad to get out to this is Point Danger a wall that sits in 30-35mish rising up to 10m. Apparently its got overhangs galour, and this wall runs for km’s.)
[Edit: Please take note that there is a weather warning for the ingoldsby reef. Anything but good conditions will make this site very surgey.]
Second dive: 13th Beach. It’s right in the marine park of Bells Beach Torquay way. Depths range from 15-26m. Spots can be choosen to suit the persons preference.
Third dive: Point Impossible. As it says on the tin. This is apparently the beez neez of dives in the area. It sits shallow in 8-10m, hence its the last dive of the day.
Costs (for BSAC members only): $45 a dive or $85 for two. 3 dives $125 for non BSAC members, $50 a dive or $95 for two. 3 dives $140 (payment in advance please)
Aifill's available from Jeff as well.
SHOULD PEOPLE FANCY A SECOND DAY OF DIVING
Sunday 13th April 2008
10am – Euro – book on as normal.
Or
Shore dives – t.b.c Still in the preperation stage.
So if interested, contact Neil, and pay your money into the account.

William Salthouse and Familly BBQ 19th April 2008
Posted by Puddlediver on Mon, 17 Mar 2008 12:09 PM (257 reads)
i've booked Scuttlebutt for the 19th April, for inside the bay for the day. The reason being is so that we can dive the William Salthouse, and then either the hurricane, or possibly the wall. However, the main focus is to dive the William Salthouse.
To explain, the William Salthouse, is one of the most historical shipwrecks in Victoria. Its also one of the most protected. However, we've just managed to secure a permit to dive this wreck, hence we plan to dive it on the 19th April.
To explain a bit about the wreck, the wreck is dated to 1841, and is exceptionally intact, with its cargo being clearly visable. However, due to the real potential of the site being damaged and reclaimed by the sea, the site has had a large number of artificial sea grass mats placed around the site, in an attempt to retain sand around the wreck, to provide protection.
Hence, much of the site is no longer visable, being now covered up by the sand for protection purposes.
In fact, i would state that this site is one of the most archaeological important maritime dive sites in Victoria. But, i stress, if you imagine this site to look and be like one of the submarines, or ships in the ships graveyard, then you'll be disappointed. This site is an Archeologcal site of great importance, and it is only due to recent events that we are able to obtain a permit for this site.
So anyhow, if your interested? please look at this for more information:
www.heritage.vic.gov.a...oSheet.pdf
www.melbourne-australi...house.html
Also, this is on a first come first served basis, and we have a maximum of 10 people on the boat.
Costs will be $50 for club members, $55 for non club members, or for a double dive, $95 for club members, $100 for non club members.
The second dive of the day will be the wall, unless people suggest or request an alternate site??.
Ohh, and with this as well, we will be having a BBQ at Portsea between dives. The idea being that this is a familly day, so, all are welcome, whether this is just for A dive, or just for the BBQ.
So, if you are interested? please contact me as soon as possible, as DEPOSITS ARE ESSENTIAL, for this trip, and deposits are due by the 1st April.

Basic Rescue Training - Sat 23rd Feb
Posted by hev123 on Mon, 11 Feb 2008 02:32 AM (332 reads)
On Saturday 23rd February there is a rescue training session with Wayne Murray as instructor.
Schedule
8am - ~9:30am Theory session at Scuba Doc
~9:30am - 1pm Shallow water drills Portsea pier/beach
~2pm dive with Dive Vic. (place to be determined) - this is for fun not required as part of the training
The aim of this day is to get everyone a good grounding in the basics and try to even out some of the mismatches in experience and training that we have. i.e. bring all participants up to the same level so that we can run the more complex training for the Dive Leader trainees later in the year. So for those that want to practice and/or refresh skills this is the perfect opportunity. At this stage we are not planning any specific O2 administration skills as part of this.
The in water training will be extremely weather dependant, we will need calm conditions. Wayne can also be available Sunday 24 if the weather prevents us doing the drills on Saturday or if anyone wants to do a formal test/sign off for specific skills up to Sports Diver.
Anyone wanting to join the activities for the day either as trainee or victim please let Heather know via the Forums

Travel & Trip Reports Needed
Posted by Puddlediver on Thu, 07 Feb 2008 02:27 AM (309 reads)
TRAVEL & TRIP REPORTS NEEDED
Hi All, just been informed by HQ that they are collecting trip and travel reports for their members travel database. In particular, they are very very keen on reports from this side of the world. Thus, depending upon the quality of the report, HQ will give the club up to $40 of vouchers for the BSAC books shop (note, that includes training material as well, so...), for each and every report.
The report can be as long or as short as you wish, it may or may not include details about the diving, or if any diving occurred, just providing its got some relevance to divers ie there was 3 dive shops on the water front, the local dive sites were x, etc. As for location or trips, they have a massive void for over this side of the world, so they said they'd be happy with a report on Mt Gambier, and Wilson's Prom, and the Torquay weekend away, as well as my little expedition up North over Christmas.
If you have photo's as well, even better. The summary i got was that if yo was only somewhere for a couple of days, then keep it simple, if you think its somewhere where you think other people will / may want to visit?? especially if they have families etc, then the more detail the better.
Anyhow, let me know if someone wants to take this of my hands?? otherwise, for now, please send through all reports to myself, for forwarding onto HQ.
Regards
Neil
