BSAC Ocean Diver Course

So What is involved in Learning to dive?

The BSAC Ocean Diver course teaches you all the basic skills to become a diver. At the end of the course you will be qualified to dive to a depth of 20 metres with a suitably qualified buddy. You will also be able to use Nitrox for safer diving.

The course covers the practical aspects of diving (how to use fins, how to float neutrally buoyant in the water, how to get safely to the surface in the unlikely event that something goes wrong with your equipment and so on) and the theory needed for diving (how to calculate safe limits of time and depth when you dive and what happens to your body when it is under pressure).

There are seven theory lessons (lectures) of approximately 1 hour long, followed by a simple exam.

Concurrent with the theory lessons are 6 to 10 practical 'Sheltered Water' sessions at the beach or in the swimming pool.

After completing the sheltered water training there are five dives in Open Water where you will practise the skills and progressively increase your experience of different diving conditions and increasing depths.

The BSAC training methodology involves continual assessment and you may have to repeat some skills, though usually this only takes a couple of extra dives, if any. Once all the dives are complete you are a fully fledged BSAC Ocean Diver and can dive on regular club trips or even take your new qualification on diving holiday anywhere in the world.

To arrange to Learn to Scuba Dive, please contact our Training Officer.

And after that?

We recommend you enjoy yourself and go diving! Once you feel more comfortable, begin the BSAC Sport Diver training. Of course, like any new skill, once you start learning you never really stop and the club offers increasing levels of qualification to those who want to improve their diving and meet new challenges.

See the Advanced Diving page for details.
